Located in the Upper Ardeche valley, the young town of Barnas (slightly over 100 years old) will seduce you with its rich and well-preserved heritage and natural wealth. Nestled hamlets, stone bridges, the botanical trail, beautiful valleys and mountain ridges are there for you to discover along the way.
This loop which begins in the village centre will allow you to discover Barnas’ natural wealth and its charming nestled hamlets.

    Botanical trail

    The botanical train was created by the association "Les Amis de Lafarre" and invites you to the discovery of the local flora. The signage relates the specificities of the plants and the trees

Description

  1. Departure point from the hikes info board at Saint Théophrède Square. Climb the stairs between two houses. At the top, follow the road on the right. From the top, you will be able to admire really scenic views of the valley of the Ardèche and, in the distance, of the Chadenac tower, a vestige of a 960 year-old feudal castle.
  2. You are now on the botanical trail of Jilieux and Lafarre valleys planned and built by “The Friends of Lafarre” association. Thanks to small wooden signs, you can learn the names of the different vegetables on display.
  3. Walk under the stone cross to reach the Pouget hamlet situated on a “Serre” (hilly ridge or top) separating the Jilieux and Lafarre valleys. Follow the road.
  4. Turn left at the junction and when you reach the Lafarre hamlet, keep straight on and cross the Lafarre stream. Go down the local road to reach the RN102.
  5. Once on the RN102, take left for around 50m and cross the national road and take the narrow lane on the opposite side which winds down to the river.
  6. PoteauAt the Bouix bridge, follow the “Barnas 1.1 km” direction. Continue on the paved road, ford the Lafarre stream (Be careful as it is impassable after heavy rains).
  7. Take the first road on the right to reach RN 102 then turn left. Do be careful as you walk along to Saint Théophrède square and back to your departure point.

Access and parking

From Aubenas, take the N102 in the direction of Le Puy. It will take you to Barnas in approximately 30 minutes.
